Possible Swine Flu Case in PA
Quote:
ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - We could have our first case of swine flu in Pennsylvania. Our sister station KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh reports a woman there is being treated for a possible case.
An Allegheny County hospital spokesperson told KDKA a woman who just got back from Mexico came in at about 2:00 p.m. Tuesday with severe flu symptoms. They believe it could be swine flu.
The governor of Connecticut just announced two men in that state could have the illness. Those two patients also just returned from Mexico. So far 64 cases have been confirmed nationwide with about 150 deaths in Mexico.
Travel plans for people in our area have been affected by the scare. President Obama hasn't shut down border crossings with Mexico yet. Some local people are still hoping to take their Mexican vacations. Others aren't even chancing it.
“The federal government issued a travel warning recommending that U.S. travelers avoid all unnecessary travel to Mexico. The Department of Health has increased our surveillance efforts state wide so that if we do have a case we will know about it as soon as possible,” a Pennsylvania State Department of Health spokesperson said.
Although everyone is recommending against it, some local travelers are still taking their chances in Mexico.
“Some people are insistent that they are going to be going to Mexico. They've had their travel plans arranged, and they don't want to miss it. We have people call and ask if they can still go and right now it's recommended they don't go,” Dr. Anthony Maniglia, an internal medicine specialist in Altoona said.
“They maybe book them six months, a year ago and they work maybe for places that their trip is actually booked and they can't change their dates,” travel agent Donna Wilt said. Wilt owns Classic Travel Agency in Duncansville.
Mexican resorts and some cruise lines are putting people's health before profits. Carnival Cruise Lines have canceled all Mexican stops. Travel agents said resorts and airlines are working with travelers who aren't crazy about going on their Mexican vacations.
“There are too many other areas that maybe we can reroute their trips to so we've noticed a lot of our tour companies and hotels have a lot of different cancellation policies. Some are waiving them, some are allowing them to rebook within a 2 week period, a month period but they all have been very workable with us,” Wilt said.
Most people in the area who planned trips to Mexico in the next few weeks have cancelled. Others have asked local doctors for Tamiflu or other medicine. Doctors said you can't prevent swine flu with any medication. They're suggesting you not travel to Mexico for now
